Black Friday update

BLACK FRIDAY UPDATE- As expected we will have just 4 titles in when we open tomorrow, hopefully those outstanding will follow soon (we will post out if and when they do). You can see why there is a  reluctance of UK Record & Suppliers Shops to get involved in this day, unlike Record Store Day all titles are imports hence the small numbers available in the UK and the delays in reaching the shops. On the positive side is anything we do get in will be pretty rare on this side of the pond.

Wednesday 27 November 2013

Black Friday

BLACK FRIDAY - with just two days to go it's still all in the lap of the gods what will actually land. All expected titles can be found on our Websites RSD page. As these are all strictly limited US imports some may arrive after the day....this is indicated on the RSD page. With so few being available in the UK we are going by RSD rules and it is simply first come first served...BUT PLEASE CHECK on that RSD page, anything marked as CONFIRMED will be in on Friday. We open at 10.30am. If it is not confirmed and you want to turn up on the Friday you can pre-order non arrivals on the same basis...first pre-order first to get when it arrives, you will be contacted on arrival.
Plans for next years Record Store Day are already underway nationally and this looks to be even bigger again in 2014.

Sunday 24 November 2013

Cassette Store Day 2013

Yes, thats right we are getting information on an event for Indie stores celebrating the humble and much maligned Cassette. A recent resurgence in Analogue interest has undoubtedly been the catalyst for this. The International CASSETTE STORE DAY is planned for September 7th. Details are all abit sketchy at the moment but will keep you updated with details as we get them, for now here is some info...
The project's leaders are a trio of labels that are already in the habit of releasing new music on cassette: Sexbeat, Kissability and Suplex Cassettes. F**ked Up and Fair Ohs are among the bands who will issue special Cassette Day recordings, and partners like 4AD, Bella Union, Wichita, Kanine and Domino have vowed to reissue classic records that never made it to magnetic tape. These will include LPs by the Flaming Lips, Deerhunter, At the Drive-In and the Pastels.
All sounds very interesting....

Friday 19 July 2013

Death Waltz Recording Co.

We now stock....
DEATH WALTZ Recording Co.
Founded by Record Store Day UK coordinator and music industry veteran Spencer Hickman in 2011, Death Waltz Recording Company is a boutique soundtrack label releasing vinyl, CD & digital.
Working closely alongside legendary composers and directors such as John Carpenter, Richard Kelly, Alan Howarth and Fabio Frizzi to deliver brand new definitive audio re-masters and sleeve notes, Death Waltz also commissions artwork from acclaimed artists including Dinos Chapman, Jay Shaw, Graham Humphreys & Candice Tripp to create exclusive artwork for each project. With its careful attention to detail, it has quickly established itself as the premier soundtrack label in cult films.
Each release is pressed on 180g coloured vinyl and comes with posters and prints of the artwork, housed in heavyweight tip-on (casebound) jackets.
Having been featured in magazines such as Spin, Mojo, Dazed & Confused, Vice & Wire magazine, its wide reach belies the preconceived notion that soundtrack labels are just for a niche audience, and with more titles being added all the time to its already impressive catalogue it has become the go-to company for composers and filmmakers alike who want their work released in the highest quality packages available.

Please note shop closing 1/2 hour early on Friday 28th June at 3.30pm. All other opening times unchanged.

Reserve and Collect

Our new RESERVE AND COLLECT service is now up and running on our ONLINE STORE page on this website, although still lots of NEW vinyl titles to add to database, its going to take time. But over the next few weeks we hope to put all titles up to view. This service does not involve payment, simply gives you the chance to reserve something before it sells at the shop and avoid the frustation of finding its sold out on arrival at 28 New Street. We plan to extend this to Pay and Collect eventually and maybe then Mail order service if required. But we dont want to move away from 1 to 1 contact and the social element which is very important, so its a small step at a time. Anyway, see what you think and any feedback on this whether positive or negative will be gratefully received...thanks.
No plans at this stage to put anything but NEW VINYL on our page.

HOUSE BY THE CEMETARY by Walter Rizzati
Italian Splatter/Hammer Horror spectacular!
1000 only Coloured Vinyl!!!
The score uses a basic ensemble of piano, drums, synthesiser, electric bass and guitar, a line-up similar to the one established by Fabio Frizzi in his scores for Fulci. The signature sound of The House by the Cemetery is a heavily flanged electric guitar, which seems to twist and curdle in the air like decaying filaments of some malevolent odour seeping from the cellar of “that Freudstein house… that Freudstein house”. “Quella Villa”, which underscores the film’s opening scenes, is a Morricone-influenced piece for jagged rhythms, hammered into our nerves with syncopated drum and piano. It’s not the most subtle approach but this is a Lucio Fulci film after all, and besides, Rizzati also delivers some breathtakingly beautiful passages, reflecting the sadness that permeates so much of Fulci’s work, in particular the various incarnations of “Tema bambino” which underscore the parallel universe of pretty little dead girl Mae (Silvia Collatina). “Chi Sta Arrivando” glooms across the soundstage like a spectre snooping around a favourite hunting ground, while “Incontro” melds curdling guitar with a piano motif that sounds like something played by ghosts in the back room of a dusty antique shop. Of course the title music “I Remember” is the centrepiece, resonating with all that is marvellous in Fulci’s Gothic horror cinema. Like J.S. Bach scoring “The Hammer House of Horror”, it’s a gleefully macabre organ recital with phantasmal singers wordlessly flitting around the melody, the whole thing delivered with a slow pomp that suggests the funeral cortège of a deceased prog-rocker.

TWINS OF EVIL by Harry Robinson
LP AND CD
Spot varnish cover with Exclusive Cover art by Eelus.Comes with a giant 24 x 24 poster of the cover art.Includes sleevenotes by Hammer Historian Marcus Hearn & Eelus.
The first collaboration with the legendary Hammer Films sees Harry Robinsons score conducted by Phillip Martell appear on transparent blood red vinyl for initial orders only. This score mixes Hammer's usual melodramatic orchestral stylings
with a very cool spaghetti western feel that makes this a truly unique score in Hammers cannon.

BORIS AND JOE VOLK
Split Release

"In the heady blue haze of 2007 a meeting of minds took place. Portishead curated ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas that year and amongst the artists they selected were the irrepressible Japanese band Boris and Bristol singer-songwriter Joe Volk. From seeing each other play that weekend, a friendship formed that lay the foundations for this Boris/Joe Volk release.
A year after ATP, Joe was asked to support Boris at their headline show in London and by 2011 the split-release project was fully underway. Now, 5 years to the day of their first encounter, Invada are proud to present this collaboration which will be available only on a heavy vinyl pressing. Boris are well known for spanning multiple genres of music throughout their 20 year history. Supremely heavy. Always unexpected. Their presence on stage is something to be witnessed. They have been classified as space rock, outsider metal, avant rock and many more, all giving a nod to the other-worldliness of the sound they create.

HOOKWORMS
Pearl Mystic is an absolutely thunderous statement of intent for Hookworms after a portentous couple of years of live shows and limited releases.

BLANK REALM
Go Easy
Pink 180gram Coloured vinyl. Fire Records are thrilled to announce that they have signed one of their favourite bands, Australian psychedelic pop outfit Blank Realm.
Their new album Go Easy initially came out on a limited edition, vinyl only run via the awesome tastemaker label Siltbreeze and in Australia on the equally wonderful Bedroom Suck, but now through Fire it will be getting the widely distributed release it deserves in March, on CD and Pink 180gram 12" LP.

FOLLAKZOID - ii   LP
Full length follow up to SBR-044 eponymous EP from Jan.2011. For fans of Moon Duo, Psychic Ills, Silver Apples. Föllakzoid began in Santiago, Chile from what they describe as the result of, a product of a trance experience between friends, sort of a soul abduction in which they ve been living since 2008.
Föllakzoid craft one of the finest kraut-rock record in years

Jacks the lad!

Jack White Takes The Helm As Record Store Day 2013 Ambassador

It’s confirmed! Record Store Day is abundantly proud to announce Jack White as its Ambassador for 2013!

You already know that Record Store Day exists to support the independent record community, now a worldwide event in its 6th year with well over 1,000 stores around the globe in participation. As the event’s impassioned ambassador and a supremely respected music maker in his own rite, White has a few profound things to say about the way we communicate, take in art, issue forth ideas and generally get on as a society, so we’re going to get out of his way and let him say it…
Years ago someone told me that 1,200 high school kids were given a survey. A question was posed to them: Have you ever been to a stand-alone record shop? The number of kids that answered "yes" was... zero.

Zero? How could that be possible? Then I got realistic and thought to myself, "Can you blame them?" How can record shops (or any shop for that matter) compete with Netflix, TiVo, video games that take months to complete, cable, texting, the Internet, etc. etc? Getting out of your chair at home to experience something in the real world has started to become a rare occurrence, and to a lot of people, an unnecessary one. Why go to a bookstore and get a real book? You can just download it. Why talk to other human beings, discuss different authors, writing styles and influences?  Just click your mouse.  Well here's what they'll someday learn if they have a soul; there's no romance in a mouse click.  There's no beauty in sitting for hours playing video games (anyone proud of that stop reading now and post your opinion in the nearest forum).  The screen of an iPhone is convenient, but it’s no comparison to a 70mm showing of a film in a gorgeous theater.  The Internet is two-dimensional…helpful and entertaining, but no replacement for face-to-face interaction with a human being.  But we all know all of that, right?  Well, do we?  Maybe we know all that, but so what?
Let's wake each other up.
The world hasn't stopped moving. Out there, people are still talking to each other face-to-face, exchanging ideas and turning each other on. Art houses are showing films, people are drinking coffee and telling tall tales, women and men are confusing each other and record stores are selling discs full of soul that you haven’t felt yet.  So why do we choose to hide in our caves and settle for replication?  We know better.  We should at least. We need to re-educate ourselves about human interaction and the difference between downloading a track on a computer and talking to other people in person and getting turned onto music that you can hold in your hands and share with others.  The size, shape, smell, texture and sound of a vinyl record; how do you explain to that teenager who doesn't know that it's a more beautiful musical experience than a mouse click?  You get up off your ass, you grab them by the arm and you take them there.  You put the record in their hands.  You make them drop the needle on the platter.  Then they'll know.
Let's wake each other up.
As Record Store Day Ambassador of 2013 I’m proud to help in any way I can to invigorate whoever will listen with the idea that there is beauty and romance in the act of visiting a record shop and getting turned on to something new that could change the way they look at the world, other people, art, and ultimately, themselves.
Let's wake each other up.
Record Store Day co-founder, Michael Kurtz of the Department Of Record Stores, who, last month, was made a Chevalier by the French Minister Of Culture during MIDEM, says of White’s appointment, “Jack White is a record store owner, a record label head, a record maker, and a record consumer. The passion, pride, creativity and independent spirit he puts into every one of those roles is undisputed. We can think of no better Ambassador for Record Store Day 2013, and are thrilled to have Jack White on board to celebrate the culture of the independent record store.”

Welcome to 2013

Here we go again, another year with so much to look forward too. Our Record Fairs are now in sight and having just returned from a trip to Prestatyn I have to say am very much looking forward to the trip to the Scala in July. The Cinema now boasts a very swish Courtyard Cafe on the High Street and attached to the Scala frontage. The retail Park is nearing completion and is due to open in March ahead of our visit to the Town. Travel links to the Town are second to none with the Bus and Train station just yards from the venue. But before all that the Civic Hall beckons on March 9th and dealer interest in this is at an all time high. April sees Record Store Day at our shop and our Fair in Mold on April 20th....much excitement over this. As far as the shop goes we hope to have our Online sales page up and running by the Spring, if not before. This is we hope will give customers the option of a click and collect service allowing the facility of payment by Debit,Credit Card or Paypal, which is something we dont currently have in the shop.Intially we will only use this for NEW vinyl and not Used titles in the shop. There is so much we can do and getting to the final goal will probably never happen as you always see there are things you can improve on, so as you get closer the horizon moves further moves......but the fun is trying to do the best you can with what you have and always looking forward.
Happy New Year to all and hope to see you soon....
