Last shop standing film

It seems we are to get a mention in the Last Shop Standing film (to be filmed during January 2012 for release early Summer), Graham Jones the author of the book of the same name is overseeing the project, have included some info below.

Last Shop Standing

The fall and resurrection of the independent record store

The Project we would love you to be a part of…..

Last Shop Standing is collaboration between award winning feature film company Blue Hippo Media, www.bluehippomedia.com and Proper Music Publishing Ltd.

Based on the successful book of the same name, Last Shop Standing will be a 60-minute documentary to be released early summer 2012. It will be a celebration of the unique spirit of comradeship and entrepreneurial ingenuity that has enabled so many shops to keep operating successfully against the backdrop of massive changes in the music industry, the biggest recession in years, the growth of online file sharing and the explosion of choice in music consumption.

Not long ago there was a record shop on every high street, but over 500 independent record stores have closed during the last few years. Record shops were always more than retail outlets, they are part of our culture; they support new bands and local talent. A place for musicians and music fans to congregate, to browse away a few hours, to walk away with music they didntt know existed.

Who will be featured…..

The film will feature appearances by musicians including Norman Cook and Richard Hawley along with industry insiders and record shop owners. The film will celebrate and promote our great independent record stores.

What will happen once the film is completed.......

We will enter Last Shop Standing in a range of national and international documentary film festivals and we are already exploring opportunities for broadcast on both mainstream and cable/satellite channels in both the USA and UK. In addition a DVD will be produced that will be promoted through our extensive network of trade outlets, mailing lists and associated web-sites

Buy featured items from this site

As many will know the BUY FEATURED page of this site has remained dormant since the launch of this website about 6 month's ago, we have promised to get our finger out and at last there is one item up for sale. One item, i hear you say! Well it's a start, after abit of nervous coding I think all looks good. Only new vinyl will be listed intially and we will probably concentrate on FRUITS DE MER items for a trial period. Any payment requires the buyer to have a PAYPAL ACCOUNT, we think for security reasons this is the easiest and most widely used option.

Vinyl makes comeback on Radio

Vinyl is to make a comeback on the radio, for a day.

BBC Radio 6 Music has announced it will be playing only vinyl on New Year's Day.

Most BBC stations phased out vinyl in favour of CDs in the 1990s and the majority now use digital versions of songs.

Presenters Jarvis Cocker and Guy Garvey will be among those dusting off their turntables and Don Letts will be bringing his own seven-inch singles.

But 6 Music bosses have turned the clock back with an "All Vinyl" day to round off a month-long celebration of vinyl.

Station editor Paul Rodgers said: "In a world dominated by digital music, vinyl is a format still close to the hearts of many music lovers and increased sales demonstrate its enduring appeal."

A spokeswoman for the station said: "Listeners can expect rare gems, insights and a few crackles and pops when digital goes analogue for one day only."

Singer-songwriter Richard Hawley will host a show talking to prominent acts such as Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead about the joys and the pitfalls of vinyl.

Dance DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall and singer Cerys Matthews will be joining the vinylfest in their shows.

Awesome end of year party

The Ironworks in Oswestry are hosting a (free entry) end of year party on Friday December 30th 9pm, headed by the AWESOME ZOMBIE ANTS. Bands,DJ's a right good time in prospect at this great venue. The Awesome Zombie Ants also have a really nice red vinyl 12" 5 track EP which just by coincidence we have instore. Electro-rock, it's hard to pigeon hole this great slab of vinyl. Neil Philips of the band also has a side project called SUPERMARKET (also appearing on the night) their CD release is a very clever piece indeed. Sure there will be some on sale at the Ironworks, but if you need a SUPERMARKET CD or AWESOME ZOMBIE ANTS album,APPENDECTOMY (on CD) just let me know.

Mugstar release...more info

*Green vinyl. Edition of 800* Following up their 'Lime' album for Important, Liverpool's psychedelic rock unit Mugstar have enlisted notorious former Loop frontman Robert Hampson to remix album track 'Serra'. What they, and you, get is an epic, 39-minute overhaul. The first 19 minutes or so concentrate on the cyclical krautrock rhythms, sounding kinda like some long lost session recording from an Alpine commune circa '73; one long Head-feeding stretch of motorik percussion enveloped by blown-out harmonic distortion and squally feedback. The flipside essentially swallows the beat and heads out into vintage Tangerine Dream-alike (Klaus Schulze era) soporific ambient drift....in stock now £14

Fair trade

Last Saturday's Record Fair saw the end of this year's events in North Wales, we resume in March 2012 (all dates can be found on our Fairs page). The weather was very kind again in Denbigh (if not a little nippy) and it looks like we just missed the nasty stuff on it's way this week. About 200 visitors on the day which although down abit on the Summer Fair, was to be expected given we are only three weeks away from Christmas. You will notice that next years Fairs finish at the end of October which although quite abit earlier for a last event we think it reflects the visitor trends for events such as these. Traditionally (and not much has changed over the years) March-October is prime time for Record Fairs, the only exception being in the City were you can get away with a Christmas or NewYear date. So, we look forward to 2012.....but still lots to do in our Record Shop before then.

More 2012 Record Fair dates

We can now confirm that we will be adding an extra Denbigh Fair on Saturday June 16th, thanks to the staff at Denbigh Town Hall who have allowed us use of this great venue in the height of the Summer, due to the unfortunate loss of the Pavilion in Flint due to the re-development of the Leisure Centre. A comparable venue has not been found in Flint despite our best efforts, but hopefully we can return there if the situation changes. In addition to the Denbigh Fair we also have now pencilled in Prestatyn for Saturday May 19th. This will be our second visit to the very impressive Scala and being a relatively new venue for us we will give it our full attention to ensure a great day there.

Add abit of Glamour to your deck

POST WAR GLAMOUR GIRLS
‘Ode to Harry Dean’ / ‘Spitting Pearls’
Double A-side single on limited 7”
- In our shop from release date, Mon 10th October 2011
Run of only 200 7” singles (including free digital download with every copy)
What you have here is the debut single from one of the brightest hopes of 2011. Post War Glamour Girls come on like Nick Cave fronting Portishead, or Tom Waits grappling with Modest Mouse. Heavy hitting and dry witted, the two songs on this single swell up and boil over into a pair of brooding, thumping masterpieces that reflect both sides of this remarkable band’s aesthetic – the manic, blood-spattered snarl of ‘Harry Dean’ and the more considered (radio-friendly), quiet menace of Pearls. Wearing their hearts firmly on their sleeves, PWGG live shows are a gripping affair. The sets are laced with reckless abundance as songs tinker into a clatter and clatter into a roar before collapsing in a proud heap on top of the audience.
Touring the UK during this Month including support for John Cooper Clarke in Wakefield on October 19th

Building up momentum

With the end of September in site, the first 6 month's of 2011 (April-September) have been our best to date since opening Feb.2009. From those cold February days with little knowledge of what lay ahead (but plenty of optimism),time seems to have passed in a blink of an eye. I would like to thank everyone for their support, truly inspiring. Two and a half years in, it still feels like the start - there is so much more to do. Some things that seemed like a great idea proved not to be and others you think will never work do! But this is a marathon (hopefully) and not a sprint and the fun is in feeling your way as you go. Thanks again, hope to see you soon.

Wednesday, 21 September 2011

The Pavilion signs off

A great day at the Pavilion Leisure Centre for last Saturday's Record Fair, high attendance with lots on offer from some of the UK's top record dealers. But it was a bitter sweet moment as just the night before the Fair, we were told that the the Centres refurbishment which includes a new 10 tin bowling alley, will mean that the Castle Suite will be no more! This of course means looking for another venue. Whether this is possible to find one in Flint remains to be seen, but visitors were genuinely sad to hear the news and we will do all we can....Flint has been very kind to us over the last six years. Keep you informed as and when.

FRUITS DE MER + MUGSTAR

We now have instore, the incredible new release by CRANIUM PIE - Mechanisms1 GatefoldLP, coloured vinyl of course. Sold out at source but we currently have a limited amount at our shop. The band completely blew me away with a blistering live performance. You can check out Album tracks on various sites including Youtube. We also stock THE WOODEN SHJIPS.

Flint Record Fair - Saturday 10th September

360 degree tour of our shop

The camera pans round but you can use your mouse to view up/down or wherever you want. Obviously the shop changes on a daily basis with new stock and internal re-shuffles but hope it gives you a little flavour of the UK's smallest Independent Record Store?

Mold delivers again..with overseas interest

Another solid performance in Record Fair terms at the Daniel Owen Community Centre last weekend. A continual stream of visitors throughout the day kept the attendance numbers in line with previous visits to Mold. It was also good to see that the Fair attract outside interest noteably from a Japanese buyer. He arrived (very eagerely) at 7.30am, and although the Fair officially opened it's doors at 10am we did make an exception in this case, he remained until 1 o'clock before turning his attention to our shop just around the corner, finally departing around 2pm. The length of time spent in Mold we feel is a reflection of the high quality supplied by the excellent dealers on the day,he was also fascinated by size of the shop which resulted in....a few photo's to take back to Osaka. The shop also had Russian visitors last week!

Regular as clockwork...for August

Our opening times for August are now up for all to see and you will notice that we are dependably Wednesday,Friday and Saturday all Month. Believe me it is good news to be able to say that, our hours as much documented would definately benefit from more of this, but commitments usually limit us....but not in August! The 'Buy Featured' is still something we need to crack on with so keep checking that out as we hope to have something of interest up there pretty soon. With a new FRUITS DE MER release due soon and a possible new stockist deal in the offing the next few Month's should be very interesting. The first 6 months of the year were very encouraging so hope to keep your interest there for the next 6.

Thursday, 21 July 2011

Site Launch

Welcome to the new site from Vod Music, the home of the Mold Record Shop and North Wales Record Fairs.

Here is some background information about Vod Music.

VOD Music was established in April 2004, the original business of Vinylondeck was set up with the assistance of the Welsh Development Agency who were pro-actively encouraging small business’ in North Wales at the time. The trading name of Vinylondeck (which still remains) was changed in 2006 to reflect the more diverse range of music associated with our business i.e. not all Vinyl.

In April 2006 VOD Music entered the world of record fair organising in North East Wales. The lack of local music outlets in the Mold area was the driving force behind this idea and with this in mind we endeavoured to arrange events in towns lacking Record Shops. The first year saw 3 events and this has been increased slowly but surely to 7 or 8 per year.
Late in 2008 we saw an opportunity to open a small Record Shop of our own in Mold, Flintshire. After a quick refit the dream became a reality in February 2009 and Mold Record Shop has been there ever since and is reputedly the smallest Independent UK Record Shop.

On sale you can find Vinyl, CD’s, DVD’s, band merchandise Pop Art, Posters, Badges, Magazines and quite a bit more.

In 2010 the shop participated in Record Store Day for the first time, our profile was raised by this great annual event and in 2011 the shop encountered its 1st queue for the following Record Store Day. Despite opening during the credit crunch of 2009 Mold Record Shop continues to buck the trend.

The shop much like the Fairs is geared up to match needs and wants of customers. Our original motto ‘ bringing the music to you’ remains through the Record Fairs we organise, these are real feel-good events and offer a tremendous range of music supplied by some of the UK’s best Record dealers. At the end of the day the love of music and having a good time are the most important things to us and we can honestly say that we are very fortunate to be doing a ‘job’ that we really enjoy!
