An unexpected visitor

Last Friday, on noticing a customer checking out the Van der Graaf Generator CDs in the rack and being a lifelong fan myself, I couldnt help but ask about his interest in the group. It turned out that the customer was David Shaw Parker the author of the very collectable Van der Graaf book THE LEMMING CHRONICLES, which happily I have a copy of. He is also an actor and was into his last three nights of a production at the Theatr Clwyd. Have to say it was quite an exciting moment for me and David stayed a while and we had a very interesting chat about the band. I thanked him for his time (and his autograph) and he left clutching the latest two releases by Van der Graaf.....

Black Friday done!

Thanks for the mini queue this morning-thanks to those who waited patiently from 9 15am, although we only had a few bits and pieces for the day at least we participated and its apparent that with Suppliers and the Press onside in the UK things could definately be alot better. Just a couple of 7 inches left which we expect to sell tomorrow. Record Store day in contrast promises so much and we cant wait for April 20th next year, this year we managed to get three times as many releases for Record Store Day as the year before, the challenge starts now to better that in 2013.

Thursday, 22 November 2012

Record Store Day v Black Friday

With Black Friday fast approaching on November 23rd, it is interesting to reflect on he comparisions. Actually it seems as far as the UK is concerned there is NO comparision. There seems to be a reluctance by suppliers and distributors to embrace what is essentially an important day in the U.S.
Record Store Day by contrast has become huge and has a completely different feel. Lots of UK interest, an event which just grows every year. We are very pleased to be a part of it too and April 20th next year should be yet again something very special. So where does this leave Black Friday? Well for us there may be a few interesting releases arriving, but it will be just a few.As soon as anything confirmed we will post it on our site, but it does appear Black Friday looks destined to remain a special day on the other side of the pond.

Hopefully details of our new FLINT Record Fair venue will go live on our website very soon so keep checking our FAIRS page and click on venue once its active.
Still looking at possibility of another venue for 2013....

Christmas Crackers from Fruits de mer records

Out mid-December, let us know if you need any, lots of interest expected on these limited editions.

On the Regal Crabomophone label, Winkle 9 - US psychedelic rockers The Luck Of Eden Hall are back with a 4-track EP, comprising two songs from their brilliant new CD 'Alligators Eat Gumdrops' along with exclusive covers of The Doors' 'Crystal Ship' and SRC's 'Black Sheep'.Classy stuff from Chicago's finest.

On Fruits de Mer, Crustacean 33 - 'The White EP' - eight tracks from The Beatles' classic double album, spread across four sides of 7" vinyl. Artists contributing exclusive tracks include The Bevis Frond, Cranium Pie, Henry Padovani, Jack Ellister, Anton Barbeau and The Pretty Things (whose version of 'Helter Skelter' has to be heard to be believed - stunning!). Gatefold white sleeve, white vinyl, sequentially-numbered.
A tribute to the original, only smaller.

On Fruits de Mer, Crustacean 34 - 'The League of Psychedelic Gentlemen' -a four-track 7" featuring new or previously-unreleased tracks by four cult heroes of 'new psychedelia'  - Nick Nicely, Anton Barbeau, Paul Roland and The Bevis Frond, who have each gone into the studio, or delved into their archives, to come up with a track per artist for this one-off project. This ISN'T a new supergroup, each artist has contributed their own track).

On Fruits de Mer, Crustacean 35 - The Fruits de Mer 2013 Annual - This year it comprises the bizarre combination of a cover of Faust's 'Jennifer' by Russian prog band Vespero (that arrived too late for the 'Head Music' compilation) with a new version of 'Pegasus' by Temple Music that's a wholly unrepresentative taster for The Hollies album I'll be releasing in early 2013. The combination sounds ridiculous, but you've never heard The Hollies like this before and somehow they fit together.

The three 7" singles will each be produced in two colours of vinyl, while The White EP double 7" will be white vinyl

Thanks to all

Another great send off for our Record Fairs in Mold yesterday. A busy well attended fair is a great to behold. Just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their tremendous and continued support. Next year will be our 8th year of organising these events and in the ever changing musical landscape this is some achievement, only made possible by the fantastic backing of visitors and record dealers. We have a few new ideas for 2013 which will also include making Record Store Day on April 20th abit special in Mold. Already confirmed is one new venue in Flint and if things go to plan we hope to add another. New dealers too always bring something fresh to any event, so we will be looking for some additional faces behind the stalls. We will be in our shop EVERY Wednesday, Friday and Saturday throughout the Winter Months until our first Fair of 2013, so if you need any info on next years events pop in anytime between 10.30am till 4pm any shop day.
Thanks again, your support for the Shop and Fairs is very much appreciated, will miss the Fairs for now but will only add to the anticipation of the visit to the Civic on March 9th at Connahs Quay.

Our Sunday hours on the 23rd will be 11am till 3pm. We have opened in the past on the odd Sunday and although the jury is out on Sunday opening and we have no expectations for the day it seems only right that we should do our bit for the Town.
In the meantime we have had a few nice bits and pieces of used vinyl in, including the odd bit of Krautrock. This genre has proved very popular and we hope to sustain and hopefully expand this section over the coming Months. More LAST SHOP STANDING DVDs due in around 24th of this Month with more new vinyl arrivals which may be of interest very soon.

Leg up from Denbigh

Just completed my usual advertising leg work around Denbigh ahead of our next Record Fair in the Town on Saturday 8th September. Always an enjoyable part of the lead up to any event. The people of Denbigh have embraced the Fairs over the last six years and we really appreciate the local support from shops, bars etc who have been only too willing to display our posters. Denbigh Town Hall is probably our largest venue, certainly visually from outside very impressive. With all dealers booked for the day....a few new faces too, it should be a great day.

Wednesday, 22 August 2012

Do hear this!

We have the amazing album by  SIR ADMIRAL CLOUDESLEY SHOVELL available on Gatefold Vinyl, who can resist a cover with a big Budgie on it. This is a extremely desirable album....Don’t Hear It… Fear It!  finds this Hastings threesome delivering the kind of greasy hard-rock thrills rarely heard in this climate of blind nostalgia and misjudged authenticity. It’s hard ’n’ heavy, without the marshmallow; it’s old-fashioned yet so NOW that it hurts; it has yer actual Tony McPhee of the Groundhogs on it..
Also arrived is the GOJIRA album L Enfant Sauvage plus, Ry Cooders Down at the Field and Tom Waits On the Scene 73.

Friday, 17 August 2012

Limited to just 100 copies on Heavyweight vinyl....now instore!
Devizes is an Acid Folk inspired orchestral horror soundtrack that charts the chase, capture, and subsequent murder, of the last stone circle builder in the British Isles. This journey through a paranoid and violent world has been a new musical direction for Paul Kenney ,a journey that creates an atmosphere of psychosis, fear and inevitability.....

This dark orchestral soundtrack is akin to a disturbed liason between Wagner and Comus, from its soaring Wagnerian choirs, to its sprinkling of eerie chimes. This epic story is powered by Paul's ferocious bass blasts, so powerful that attempts to transcribe them to vinyl failed until a specialist cutting head was found that could harness Paul's thunderous barrage. This is an epic soundscape in the great British tradition of occult cinema, born from a folklore that Devizes perfectly understands.

Progtastic

Latest vinyl and brand new album by - San Diego maestros ASTRA  who craft expansive suites that hearken back to the original root of mind-expanding, unrestrained and genuinely progressive rock. Rich with hallucinogenic and hypnotic promise, and slathered in layers of vintage, billowing instrumentation, the band's stunning sophomore album, The Black Chord, expertly evokes the spirit, tone and vision of '70s cosmic prog, the artworks not bad either! TREES live album now arrived too!

Charts with some relevance

Some like charts others have no interest, but whatever your stance on this there has been some good work going on to include Independent stores in the equation.
So if you want a peek at whats going up or down we have included a link for you to see for yourself.  http://www.officialcharts.com/record-store-albums-chart/
Sales are collected for the charts from all significant retailers.
These retailers span independent stores, high street chains, supermarkets, internet mail order and download services. As a result, it is estimated that  around  99% of all singles sold, 98% of all albums and over 90% of all videos/DVDs are captured, enabling the compliation of these charts.
If  you visit the site you will find all you need to know about the new charts.

Having already allocated the stock we had to reservations this now leaves one sitting in the racks. So if it is still of interest be quick. For those not too bothered about the collectable side of things we hear it will be coming out on Black vinyl pretty soon, but for the same price you could have a collectable. The choice is yours. We will not be stocking the Black vinyl unless any specific orders are received.

Wooden Shjips

Had to give last nights gig in Wrexham a mention, the Wooden Shjips were in mind blowing form. Force Majuere

Will remember to chose words more wisely after the last Blog. On arrival at the shop this morning it became instantly apparent that opening up was not an option. Gas works directly in front of our door meant access to customers was at least abit perilous. The decision was taken immediately to close for the day, this being Independents day was not well timed by planners of the works. But no use griping about it, just got to dust ourselves off and move on. Happily the pipework in front of the shop is completed now and the rather large holes will be filled this afternoon. Tarmaccing is to take place by the Weeekend, so when we re open on Wednesday 11th July all should be good. To anyone who made the trip to the shop only to find in barriered off and closed we are very sorry for any incovenience, but we really had no choice. We have text a few and Tweeted and put it out on Facebook so hopefully you got the message before making the trip. Normality will be resumed next Wednesday and we have some cracking NEW vinyl arriving before then. Will let you know as soon as it lands.

Lifes a Gas!

Turning up at the shop this morning I couldnt help feeling that those pesky  Gas works which are currently taking place in Mold would have an adverse affect on the day. One way streets, holes in the road and Pavements, barriers. Despite the many Business open as usual signs dotted around the Town , you can never guarrantee people will really believe the assurances offerred.Happy to say it seems that people are not to be put off by what really is a minor disruption to normality. You can get to the car parks, the paths are clear and all shops are open for business, heres to bunker mentality and thanks to all who ventured to the Town today, very enjoyable day indeed.

Record Store Day....phew!

Were do you start on this epic day. Just like to thank all those who voted with their feet for real music! I never in my wildest dreams expected the level of support for our little shop and of course the Record Fair. Truly inspiring! Still in shock, but in a happy way. To see so many young vinyl lovers too gives us hope for the future of music. It is quite clear that people still love to own something tangible, real and this event underlines it for all to see. Thanks also to Luke, who provided some great music for those waiting to get into our shop from 9am. The organisers RSD deserve alot of credit for their efforts, there is no doubt that it is a shot in the arm for participating Independent Stores. We having definately progressed from this time last year and will do all we can to bring even more releases to Mold for RSD 2013!

Anticipation building towards next weekend

A busy day in the shop despite a big day of sport (and no win on the horses for me!), with just a week to go till RSD and our Record Fair in Mold the anticipation is tangible. Will be watching the mail all week to see if we really can get all we asked for. It's going to be some day (positive thinking). We are hoping to be beat our queue size record of 5! For those wanting items not on our list the best option would probably be Piccadilly Records in Manchester were they get pretty much everything (one day!) but if you do set out early as the queue usually stretches round the block. But we have to be realistic and hope that what we get in will at least whet a few pallettes and if so aim to better it next year just as we have aimed to do for 2012. Will try to confirm items as we get them during the week.

Thursday, 12 April 2012

RSD - NME special

The NME are running a special RSD feature in next weeks issue out Wednesday 18th April. We have been approached to place an ad and have taken them up on the offer...nice to look back on things like this sometime in the future. It's the lull before the storm now, expecting to be pretty busy next week preparing for the day and Record fair. We hope to confirm arrivals of items as they happen so keep checking especially towards the end of the week. Fingers crossed most if not all will arrive for the day!

Wednesday, 11 April 2012

They have been removed from our RSD list on the BUY FEATURED page.

Tuesday, 10 April 2012

RSD new additions to list

We have added 7 more titles to our RSD list, all titles listed have been ordered and are all there on merit....all abit special in their own right. Hope to confirm arrivals before the day. Organised Chaos

Well, finally the new racks have been constructed so hopefully it won't be such a tight squeeze as it has been over the last three years. The paint is drying as we speak, hopefully when we open tomorrow it will allow us to start the CD re-stocking process. So much happening at the moment it seems strange to be taking a mini-break after Thursday (back open Thursday April 5th). But the batteries are going for a super boost to cope with what promises to be a very exciting Month. The question on everyones lips is probably what are we getting in for RSD? Hope to post up on the BUY FEATURED page next week all the probables. But its still shaping up well so keep watching. The week before RSD we should take delivery of the two new FRUITS DE MER releases, more on that soon too. Finally, saw THE WHITE HILLS last week at the Kazimier club,Liverpool. If you like full on fuzzed out space rock then look no further, blistering live performance supported by Mugstar.
Just by coincidence (not exactly) have a WHITE HILLS vinyl LP in our racks, it was already ordered just proved to be a wise move. A few more Vinyl arrivals including VAN DER GRAAF GENERATORS last album, THE ONLY ONES, JANIS JOPLIN.
Have you spotted a WICKERMAN 7 inch for RSD? Thought so!

RSD Press release

20 March 2012: Public Image Limited (PiL) frontman John Lydon this evening kicked off the countdown to Record Store Day 2012 with a secret gig and launch event in London’s Shoreditch and a DJ set from Orbital. The event was streamed live to thousands of fans by Boiler Room TV.
It is just four weeks to go to the annual celebrations taking place this year on Saturday April 21. Already a record 206 stores have signed up – 197 in the UK and nine in Ireland.

The initial list of over 350 exclusive Record Store Day releases was also unveiled at the event.

Record Store Day UK coordinator Spencer Hickman said, “The support of artists and labels and music fans for this annual celebration of the indie record shop has been amazing and is really appreciated. To have PiL and Orbital play at our launch is not only a real honour, but it’s a sign of how much Record Store Day has developed.”

Hickman brought the RSD concept of exclusive releases sold only for one day through indie record shops to the UK four years ago. Last year around 180 stores took part. There were around 250 exclusive releases only available in participating stores, more than double the previous year’s tally and more than 200 artists and bands played in record stores around the country.

Many stores had queues hundreds deep when they opened on last year’s Record Store Day. Some were still operating a “one-in-one-out” policy late into the afternoon.

“Record Store Day has now become an established part of the music calendar,” said Hickman. “And what makes it special is the character and individuality of record stores. There’s nothing to beat the enthusiasm and atmosphere of a great record shop. The reason great indie stores succeed is that they love music as much as their customers do. Record Store Day is like one huge festival taking place in every part of the UK. It’s primarily about the record stores and the events, not just the products available”

In what he described as a John Rotten Roll, John Lydon said in support of Record Store Day, “The destruction of the music industry is because people can't buy records easily. A record is for life. A download is a lack of life. A poor substitute for a real wife!"

Paul Hartnoll from Orbital said, “It’s a privilege to be asked to be involved and to promote local record stores up and down the country.”

Record Store Day is sponsored by the Entertainment Retailers Association. Director General Kim Bayley said, “However big and glossy and commercialised the entertainment business becomes, it is vital that we support the grassroots stores who day-in, day-out give their support to new talent.”

Paul Quirk Chairman of ERA added “As Chairman of ERA and a music retailer I have to say for me Record Store Day is the most exciting event of the whole year. I cannot believe how it has grown over the last few years and also how the retailers and the public have embraced it. Each year it moves up another level and I am sure 2012 will be the best ever”.

RSD unleashed

We are in the running for some seriously interesting releases for Record Store Day, we won't be getting everything but if our suppliers do the business we will be more than happy with what we receive. We will be posting the possibilities (so far) on our BUY FEATURED page in the next few days. After a deluge of e-mails over the last 24 hours, once the dust settles we will keep you updated. For the full list of releases visit www.recordstoreday.co.uk
Just to be part of this event is a huge privelige and we intend to enjoy the occassion and fly the flag for Independents despite probably being the smallest Worldwide participator!

New release by Cranium Pie

Cranium Pie will have their new release on vinyl very soon. The album consists of earlier recordings 2006-9 on theirLunartica label.
The lp 'The Geometry of Thistles' is more acid folk/psych sounding than the proggier mechanisms which sold out almost instantly on the Fruits de mer label, It is available in
both handmade cd and handmade vinyl formats, but we will be only stocking the Vinyl. All pressings are individually numbered and we are hopeful of having some of the lower numbers in stock in about 3-4weeks time when they arrive. If you are interested in reserving a copy they will be priced at £18. Let me know ASAP as limited numbers will be available instore.

Find your nearest Record Shop

Having just entered the Android age in phones (number remains the same) have stumbled across a nifty APP for finding your local Record Shop. Very handy if you are on the move and want to check out a Shop on your travels. Available for the i phone and Androids is THE VINYL DISTRICT . You can find this by searching the Market on your Android or APP store on the i phone. This is basically just a map locator with address details. It's a free APP so worth a look.
